During the summer of 2023, I had the opportunity to take an Advanced Design Studio on the island of San Cristobal in the Galapagos Islands. The project is a Reforestation Research Lab constructed entirely of timber cut from an invasive species of tree on site. The building is situated on a gently sloping area, providing views of the ocean to the north and the native tree forest to the south. Because of the harsh conditions on site, we prioritized natural ventilation and shade outdoor spaces., for the researchers throughout the year in naturally ventilated spaces. In section each frame is oriented to catch the prevalent southern wind, which flows underneath, through the interior, and is channeled through the trusses above to pull warm air up and out of the spaces.
Simplicity in building construction was a driver in this project, having to consider the fact that this project is located in a remote part of the world with little access to skilled labor and construction materials. The construction system we devised can be expanded upon easily if ever necessary.
